It is the science of information and of the structures, both hardware and software, that communicate, store, and process information. The Computer Science program at AU is oriented toward students with undergraduate majors other than Computer Science, who are interested in transitioning into the Computer Science career track. We provide strong support in accomplishing the transition and in building a resume that will lead to a strong career. We are a professional Master's program rather than a brief stop toward an academic Ph.D.. Students not interested in academic careers will find our program supportive and helpful. Several characteristics distinguish the MFA Studio Art program at American University making it nationally recognized for their quality and serious nature:
1. The museums of Washington (most of which offer free admission) include the National Gallery of Art, the Hirshhorn, the Phillips Collection, the National Museum of American Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art and at least a dozen others.
2. Outstanding, nationally respected full-time faculty and an artists in residence program which brings four nationally recognized artists to teach in the MFA program two days each month for a semester (recently including Bill Jensen, Gregory Amenoff, Judy Pfaff, Gary Stephan, Frances Barth, Tom Nozkowski, Martha Armstrong, John Walker and many others, as well as weekly one day visiting artists and lecturers.
3. The Italy programs permit M.F.A. students to undertake from one or more semesters of their studio art studies in the thousand year old Umbrian Hill town of Corciano, situated in the countryside mid way between Rome and Florence, and even closer to Assisi, Siena, Orvieto, Perugia and Spoleto. Surrounding our studios in the countryside are olive groves and vineyards, farmland and forest. Yet our location a few miles from the central rail station in the metropolitan, university town of Perugia makes the rest of Italy readily accessible.
A strong sense of camaraderie and mutual support develops among the students during the course of their time here. The ambiance is one of genuine enthusiasm, sincere commitment and continuous, intensive work.
