T-Mobile

T-Mobile is a multinational mobile phone operator. It is a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom and belongs to the FreeMove alliance.

T-Mobile is a group of mobile phone corporate subsidiaries (all under the ownership of Deutsche Telekom) that operate GSM networks in Europe and the United States. The "T" stands for "Telekom." Most subsidiaries of Deutsche Telekom have names beginning with "T-". T-Mobile also has financial stakes in mobile operators in Eastern Europe. Globally, T-Mobile has 109 million subscribers, making it the world's 4th largest mobile phone service provider.

Deutsche Telekom were recently pipped at the post in acquiring O2 -- thanks to a successful bid from Spain's Telefonica.

T-Mobile is also a sponsor of several sport events in which some carry the company name. For example its own cycling team, the T-Mobile Team, or the Austrian soccer Bundesliga.

T-Mobile USA was previously known as VoiceStream Wireless (which had previously acquired regional carriers Aerial and Omnipoint and the former GTE Wireless network in the Cincinnati, Ohio area.) VoiceStream and Southeastern regional carrier Powertel were acquired by Deutsche Telekom in May 2001 for $24 billion, and changed to the T-Mobile name a few months later. Headquartered in the Factoria area of Bellevue, Washington, T-Mobile USA is currently the fourth largest carrier in the US market with 20 million customers as well as the third fastest-growing after Verizon Wireless and Cingular respectively, adding an average of about one million customers per quarter in 2004 and the first quarter of 2005. Through international roaming agreements, connections to Deutsche Telekom, and compatibility with other GSM networks, T-Mobile USA provides coverage in more places worldwide than any other U.S wireless carrier.

In 2004 and 2005, T-Mobile USA was recognized with several prestigious awards from J.D. Power and Associates, including "2004 Highest Ranked Wireless Customer Service Performance" and "2004 Highest Overall Customer Satisfaction with Wireless Retail Service" as well as the "2005 Highest Ranked Wireless Customer Service Performance" and "2005 Highest in Customer Service with Business Wireless Service". On September 7, 2005, J.D. Power announced that T-Mobile has captured every Customer Satisfaction award, sweeping all six regions of the country for the second year in a row. T-Mobile also received the "2005 Highest Wireless Call Quality Performance" for the Northeast and Southeast regions, and scored highly in the other 4 regions.

Though T-Mobile USA has a smaller coverage area than its national competitors, it provides high-quality coverage and provides a Personal Coverage Check at its stores and on its corporate website, t-mobile.com. A user can type in their address, view a coverage map of their area, and assess the quality of coverage. While most times the maps present a fairly accurate representation of true coverage, some areas receive less coverage than advertised. As of November 2005, T-Mobile USA also has various roaming agreements in place with large regional carriers, which has increased its national coverage area to match or exceed its national competitors.
