Telco Company Profile

In 1954, TELCO started manufacturing automotive vehicles in technical collaboration with Daimler-Benz. It has absorbed the technology from Daimler-Benz and has further built up a strong in-house R&D Center. Telco is the leader in commercial vehicles with 69% market share in Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) and 64% market share in Medium & Heavy Commercial Vehicle (M & HCV). In addition, Telco has a market share of 28% in UV. It has 6.4% in the high-end car segment .The construction equipment unit dominates the market with a 58% share in the hydraulic excavator market and an 66% share in crawler cranes market. TELCO is the sixth largest manufacturer of trucks in the world. It has a 50:50 alliance with Cummins Corporation USA for manufacturing of truck engines. Recently in a strategic move the construction equipment business has been hived off as a separate company Telco Construction Equipment Company Ltd., in a joint venture with Hitachi .In LCV/utility vehicles Telco is facing tough competition from Mahindra and Mahindra. Apart from manufacturing light, medium and heavy commercial vehicles, TELCO manufactures
passenger cars, excavators and machine tools. The launch of its small passenger car Indica in Dec'98 has been extremely well received. Telco is expected to sell 40000 Indica in FY2000. The Tata Safari, recorded sales of over 4,200 units in 1998-99 was adjudged the "Most Appealing Multi-Utility Vehicle" by J D Power and Associates in their 1998 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study of the Indian MUV market. With the introduction of MAGNA in AutoExpo 2000 TELCO announced its entry in the Luxury Car segment
TELCO currently exports about a tenth of its output to markets in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Europe.
