- In January 2001, Joseph Estrada the
president of Philippines was forced to resign . The popular campaign against
him was broadly reported to have been co-ordinated with SMS chain letters.
- In July 2001, Malaysia's government decreed
that an Islamic divorce (which consists of saying "I divorce you"
three times in succession) was not taken valid sent by short message.
- In the wake of the 2004 Madrid train
bombings, SMS was taken in use garner up support for large protest rallies.
